Cheesy Layered Oven Baked Lasagna

Ingredients

  • 2 packages oven-ready lasagna (not pre-cooked)

  • 32 ounces whole milk ricotta cheese

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 cup shredded parmesan cheese, divided

  • ½ teaspoon salt + more for tasting

  • ½ teaspoon pepper + more for tasting

  • ½ tablespoon dried oregano

  • ½ tablespoon dried basil

  • 1 medium sweet onion, diced

  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 pound ground pork

  • 1 24-ounce jar tomato sauce

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400℉.

  2. Lightly grease a large skillet and warm on the stove over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  3. Add ground beef and ground pork. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook until browned. Drain excess grease.

  4. Place meat mixture in a medium mixing bowl, and add ½ jar of sauce. Mix well and set aside.

  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, ½ cup parmesan cheese, ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp pepper pepper, garlic powder, oregano, and basil. Set aside.

  6. In a small mixing bowl, combine remaining parmesan and mozzarella. Set aside.

  7. Evenly spread ½ remaining tomato sauce on the bottom of a 13x9 baking dish. 

  8. Add one layer of lasagna and cover with â…“ ricotta cheese mixture. Spread â…“ meat mixture on top of ricotta. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.

  9. Place a final layer of lasagna over the meat mixture. Evenly spread the remaining tomato sauce on top and sprinkle with mozzarella  mixture.

  10. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until sauce is bubbly and cheese is melted and browned. Set oven to broil for additional browning, if desired.

  11. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes then serve, or cover and freeze.
